Putting Together a Fun & Lively Design

February 25, 2013

For those who know me, using color in both my personal style and interiors is something I enjoy doing.  There is nothing quite like walking into a colorful room.  It brings smiles and shows the fun and lively style of the homeowner.  Inspired by this gorgeous room designed by Rachel Reider, www.rachelreider.com, I wanted to break down the components to incorporating color into your own home.

Setting the Tone: The neutral backdrop on the trim and walls, dark wood floor, and architectural details create a lovely palette to establish the layers of décor.  Simple corbels repeating under the trimmed out mantle top off the beautiful concrete grey colored stone that frame out the herringbone tile firebox.

It’s all in the Shape: Recurring shapes always help to pull a space together.  This room is all about the curves.  The curve in the wing back chair, the sweeping legs on the ottoman, the knob turning on the wood chair, and the three round and oval tables.

Pops of color: A beautiful art piece such as this watercolor is a good way to have a beginning point for selecting colors.  Having neutrals covering the bigger ticket items such as the rug, sofa, & large upholstered chair in grey and ivory, the color can be added through accent furniture, pillows, throws, and accessories.

Mixing Materials: Wood, stone, and metallic materials live cohesively in this living space keeping the room from getting stagnate.

Everything Goes Together, but Not Matching:  It is tempting to always get matching sets from furnishings to accessories.  This room is proof that going together is much more interesting.  From the different chairs flanking the fireplace to the traditional leg on the sofa versus the modern sleek lines of the cocktail table.

Having Enough Lighting: Lighting is a key feature that is usually overlooked.  The three fixtures selected for this room are diverse and well placed.  Let everyone see this fun and lively room you have created!
