Butterfly House DIY

October 23, 2013

Getting the finishing touches ready for a client installation spurred me to do a DIY project.  This teal lantern I picked up at Home Goods was the perfect accent color for the space and just putting a candle inside did not seem fitting for this particular room.  By adding colorful butterflies, this lantern is transformed into a butterfly house.  Here are the supplies and steps you need to take to make one of your own.

Supplies: Faux butterflies (3), Twigs, Half-Round Floral Foam, Moss, Lantern, Hot Glue Sticks

Tools: Glue Gun, Scissors or Trimmers, Measuring Tool

Step 1: Measure the inside of your lantern

Step 2: From the tips of your twigs, measure down the height of the inside of your lantern.  Cut the first piece with scissors or trimmers about a 1/2″ shorter than the overall height.  Cut the second piece about an inch shorter, then the third even another inch shorter.

Step 3: Place the half-round foam piece inside the lantern and push the twigs into place pleasing to your taste.

Step 4: Remove the foam with twigs from the lantern.  Remove the wire that is attached to the faux butterfly.  Hot glue the butterflies on randomly on the twigs.

Step 5: Hot glue moss all over the foam base.

Continue gluing until entire foam is covered.

Step 6: Glue bits of moss behind each butterfly to hide glue.

Step 7: Place the butterflies inside your lantern and enjoy showing it off!

I hope you have been inspired by my butterfly house DIY project.
