DIY Coffee Filter & Thumbtack Wall

March 3, 2014

Trying to decide what I was going to do with the one wall in my dining room has taken me a long time.  It is open to my living room that I showed you here, has a slider door to the backyard, and is also open to the kitchen.  Wanting to keep the flow with color continuous with the living room and something architectural feeling, I new I had a winner when I saw this post on Creature Comforts with a doily and thumbtack wall.  After posting the inspiration image on my Instagram and Facebook, it caused quite a stir.

I splurged on a trip to the 99 Cents Only Store with a package of coffee filters and gold thumbtacks that happened to find their way into my basket.  My husband has finally given no thought to when I say, “I have an idea” when strange things go into the shopping bag.

Here are the supplies I used to complete this fantastic wall:

-Coffee Filters

-Gold Thumbtacks

-Scrap piece of drywall

-Orange Spray Paint (I used Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Gloss, Real Orange)

-Scissors

-Hammer

-Pencil

-An empty wall devoid of character

You could use an old cardboard box for this too.

I put three coats on mine.

This gives you varying sizes of “flowers” to work with.

I kept mine similar to the inspiration wall. With a light pencil line I was able to keep the loose curve I wanted and branched out from there.

By alternating large and small filters along with thumbtacks by themselves, I was able to achieve an organic feel to the installation.

Here was my blank wall in the dining room.

And here it is all finished, what a difference!

I am so absolutely thrilled with how this $2 wall turned out.  The transition between the two rooms is now complete and the simple composition reminds me of flowers floating through the wind.  Even if I get tired of the look, it will be easy enough to pull them off and start over fresh with a little spackle.  Please let me know if anyone else tries this, I would love to see the results.

Happy Creating!
