The Spiritual Side of Design

May 5, 2014

Design is so much more than just acquiring things; it is that spiritual side of it that you cannot attain in any tangible item.

It is so interesting to see the transformation of the human psyche when the final reveal of a design takes place and when a person then lives in the newly created space.  Each of the selections has meaning and reflects off of each other.  Colors that suite the occupants taste also drastically change their mood while navigating through the room.  Design is so much more than just acquiring things; it is that spiritual side of it that you cannot attain in any tangible item.

I believe a person’s home is a direct reflection of their personality.

Regardless of the latest trends, objects and finishes can bring back fond memories of a special time in life while still being current.  Family heirlooms that do not necessarily fit the overall style of a room can still be intentionally incorporated without standing out like a sore thumb.  Even a home office can be functional as a blank canvas, but productivity can improve by designing it to create the workers vision.  The mission statement of an entrepreneurs business can be a constant and enveloping reminder through what that area around their desk looks like.

Humans are spiritual beings whether we like to admit it or not.  And feeling uncomfortable (either physically or psychologically) in one’s own home is unsettling.  We want to be inspired, we want to express ourselves.  I have begun to start putting mood descriptions to inspiration spaces that I collect.

Rather than just stating that I like that bedspread or that wall color, this mood monitor helps me narrow down the feeling I want to have every time I enter a space.  After all, isn’t that what we really want: a beautiful personal space that evokes that intended feeling.  Being conscience of the spirit of a space and how it functions in a mental state is an important part of the design process that you do not want to leave out.
