Pillows: Mixing Patterns

Pillows: Mixing Patterns by janeane-pittman featuring a chevron throw pillow

Mixing patterns is a topic that I get asked about quite often.  I like to follow an easy formula to follow when selecting pillows.  Having pattern variety adds so much life and interest to a space.  By first selecting what I call “the queen pillow” that is a cushion with a fabric that contains multiple colors and/or tones, say more than five.  This is the pillow that speaks to your soul, the one that might cost a little more, but has that voice that calls your name saying “you love me, you have to have me!”  In this example I chose a floral pillow that features watercolor-esque bloom print all topped off with a multi-colored pom-pom trim.

Each one of the pillows plays off “the queen pillow” while giving variety of color, pattern, and scale.  The violet and orange chevron on the left acts as the large scale stripe.  Texture comes in form of turquoise while small maroon dots round out the back row.  A fun cross pattern in sky blue and chartreuse tie into all the other pillows.
