Barley with a Twist

August 8, 2014

Barley with a Twist

After I told my client about this vintage chair found at a local shop, she fell in love with it too.  The barley twist detail on the arms and legs is just divine.  She did not care for the floral fabric and wanted to have the seat recovered as well as have the arm tightened where it was a little loose.

Well, the arm turned out to be a little more intense when I discovered the whole front portion had been cracked in half and glued together, not allowing it to be a very strong joint.

OOPS!  Well, after a little thought on this, I put a metal pin in it.  From that moment on, I announced that I was going to perform surgery on my little Barley.

After carefully measuring and drilling, I inserted the pin with glue and placed the arm back into place or as I call it “Putting Barley back together again”.  I left it in a tight clamp for several days to ensure that arm was not going anywhere.

I selected a red/orange ikat fabric that has a teal accent to recover the seat along with extra batting for comfort.

Now in place in my clients music room, anyone who sits in it can enjoy the sweet sound of her playing the piano.

And, still my favorite part of this chair…the barley twist turnings.
