I recently had a eDesign client that had a small dilemma in her living room.  She had pretty much everything already figured out in her living room, but there was one part of the space that was causing her issues.  The vaulted ceiling room had a BIG wall that needed attention.  She had tried several different things, but nothing was working.  The furnishings in sitting in front of this wall was a seating arrangement consisting of two ivory arm chairs and a small end table in between.

BIG Living Room Wall

Dealing with large vertical spaces like this can be challenging.  One large piece of art may not always be the answer.  Hanging items on a large wall may not be the total solution either.  My first suggestion was to add potted plants a little higher than the backs of her chairs to both sides and a floor lamp to the right side of this seating arrangement.  This will add visual weight to this side of the room and take away so much visible wall.

Wanting to give her some options with both different styles and varying price points, I came up with three wall gallery ideas for her to choose from.

OPTION 1

Hang a round jute rug on the wall with a round mirror mounted on the center of the rug.  Then add a little width with sconces holding flowers flanking the sides.  An arc lamp gives intimacy and is in a place where it will not be in the way.

Wall Gallery Option 1

Round Jute Rug: West Elm (similar)  |  Round Mirror: Target  |  Sconces: Pier 1 Imports (similar)  |  Faux Flowers: West Elm  |  Arc Floor Lamp: World Market  |  Lamp Shade: World Market

OPTION 2

A true art gallery with a series of watercolor paintings bringing out the accent color in the room.  A driftwood floor lamp gives an earthy edge in contrast to the bright white frames and mats.

Wall Gallery Option 2

White Frames with Mats: Target  |  Ombre Watercolor Art: Outside In Art Studio via Etsy  |  Driftwood Floor Lamp: World Market  |  Lamp Shade:  World Market

OPTION 3

A painted color block detail with notched corners with wall pallet art and a metal tripod floor lamp.  With the paint color similar to the chair fabric, it will add interest without being overpowering.  A mix of rustic and modern play a part between the art and lamp.

Wall Gallery Option 3

Dandelion Wood Pallet Art: Rustic Tree House via Etsy  |  Tripod Floor Lamp: Target (similar)

So, which did she choose?  I will be posting a follow up a little later next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I thought it was so beautiful that I pulled together a quick list of items to get to get this look for yourself.  Most of the items are found on Etsy which means they are handmade or grown.

ReInvented Vintage Metal Typewriter Tables

Vintage metal typewriter tables have been on my radar lately.  I still remember having a typewriter while in school, pecking away all my reports, hoping I did not make an error, or the whole thing was goofed.  Even with the corrector cartridge, it made an awful presentation.  This bygone tool has left us with these absolutely cool tables that need another purpose.  Just because we all don’t have a typewriter in our home, it does not mean these versatile pieces can’t be used in another way.

Enter, ReInvention!  I am loving this word (even though spell check does not!)  This is exactly what I found when I did a little online prowling.  People taking this once very one-specified piece of furniture and in a way inventing a new purpose for it.

LAPTOP TABLE

One of the more utilitarian purposes I found was for a laptop table.  This is today’s typewriter afterall, so why not?

SIDEBOARD

Using a typewriter table as a small sideboard in a dining room, especially if you live in a compact space, makes for a great look.  I love how this one is placed in front of a chalkboard wall and balanced with a fun word art canvas.

NIGHTSTAND

Sometimes bedrooms, especially here is Southern California can be really tiny.  Fitting a typewriter table next to the bed is a great way to add character without sacrificing a lot of space.  I love how this one boasts a wire basket on the bottom shelf giving more room for storage for books and such.

BAR

By putting up the side leaves and stocking with glassware, ice bucket, & drinks, the typewriter table becomes an instant bar cart.

SIDE TABLE

Pairing a typewriter table with a modern chair gives a nice modern vintage feel.  It is a great side table that can easily be moved if necessary.

As a side table, the typewriter table gives a modern living space a nod to the past and giving an old piece new life.

Heywood Wakefield Dream

Heywood Wakefield Dream
Heywood Wakefield Dream by janeane-pittman featuring india home decor
I am not sure how it happens, but I seem to always go in spurts of writing blog posts constantly to them being far and few between.  Well, my lack of writing has not been due to not having anything to say, but rather I have been super busy.  After a long day of souring the county for items for my shop yesterday, I got a call saying that my mother was admitted to the hospital.  Thankfully she is in good spirits as I visited with her and my dad last evening, but it sure reeked havoc on my sleep last night.  I am completely exhausted, but I know that God will see me though.

Now onto the design stuff with a client project I am working on.  I have titled the room the Heywood Wakefield Dream.  The above concept board features midcentury modern style with a modern twist.  The colors are so bright and vibrant, just the way I like it.  I just completed refinishing two tables for this nostalgic room that you may have seen on my Instagram.

Heywood Wakefield Tables

I have to give kudos to ebay vendor needful_useful_things for the reproduction wheat refinishing stain for vintage Haywood Wakefield.  His instructions were impeccable and the product, well, amazing.  Now as soon as I showed this picture to my client, she sprung the news on me that she had another Heywood Wakefield table that was buried under a day bed that she wanted to have me refinish.

Well, that is it for today and I can’t wait to keep you posted on this rooms progress.  Also, a big thanks to the staff at West Elm South Coast Plaza for helping me out with the sofa and chair order.  Check out my Polyvore set to get any of the details.
